Be the Marshmallow

Be the marshmallow.

I don’t mean that in a meditation sense…. But it’s National S’mores Day, and I would be remiss in my duties if I didn’t acknowledge it.

We spend so much of our time waiting for ‘the good part.’ Waiting through the previews for the movie to start. Waiting in the hour-long line to get to the rollercoaster. Waiting for the clock to tick down for school to let out or for the workday to be over. Waiting to get through the endless traffic jam so you can finally get where you’re going.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you of something:

You are the smile that brightens someone’s day. You make someone happy just by coming home. There are countless ways that you make other people’s lives better just by being in of them.

You are someone’s marshmallow. Or, if you prefer, their chocolate. I don’t know anybody who likes the graham cracker part of a s’more best, but if you’re the rare one who does – then you are definitely somebody’s graham cracker.

We spend so much time waiting. And I’m not going to say that whatever you’re waiting for isn’t worthwhile, but sometimes, it’s important to acknowledge that the good part was there all along. That to a lot of people (probably many more people than you’d think), you are the good part.

So enjoy a s’more today. Or some ice cream. Or a glass of wine.

But even if you don’t choose to indulge, remember that you’re worth indulging – that you’re worthwhile and you’re worth investing in.

So… be the marshmallow. Because in a lot of ways, you already are.
